EV Charger Installation in Omaha: Costs, Permits and OPPD Rebates

May 14, 2026 · 6 min read

What it really takes to put a Level 2 charger in your Omaha garage, from panel capacity to permits to the OPPD incentive.

Home charging is the whole point of owning an EV, and a Level 2 charger cuts your charge time from overnight-and-then-some to a few hours. Here's what installing one in Omaha actually involves.

What it costs

A typical Level 2 install in Omaha runs $600 to $1,500, depending on how far the charger is from your electrical panel and whether the panel has capacity. The charger unit itself is $300 to $700 on top of that if you don't already have one. See the electrical cost guide for related pricing.

The panel question

A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit. If your panel is full or undersized (common in older Field Club, Dundee and Benson homes), you may need a subpanel or a service upgrade, which adds cost. A licensed Omaha electrician will check your panel's capacity first.

Permits and inspection

The City of Omaha requires an electrical permit and inspection for a charger install. Your electrician pulls the permit and schedules the inspection. Don't skip this, unpermitted electrical work can void insurance and complicate a future sale.

The OPPD rebate

OPPD has offered incentives for qualifying home EV chargers and time-of-use rate plans that make overnight charging cheaper. Programs change year to year, so ask your electrician for the current offer and confirm eligibility on OPPD's site before you buy.

Omahelper tip

Have the electrician assess your panel before you order a charger. Matching the charger's amperage to what your home can actually support avoids buying a unit you can't run at full speed.
